CB Fabricating Adds High-Tech Fiber Optic Laser Cutter to Its Manufacturing Arsenal

Anderson, Indiana manufacturer installs the first fiber optic laser cutting machine of its size in Indiana and adds staff to meet increasing demand for sheet metal fabrication services

Anderson, Ind. – Building on a year that topped its revenue projections by nearly 15-percent, Central Indiana-based sheet metal fabricator CB Fabricating, Inc., recently purchased and installed the industry-leading Amada ENSIS 3015 AJ fiber optic laser cutting machine. Both an addition to and improvement on the Amada NT Laser Flex Cell CO2 laser the metal fabricator installed in late 2014, the newer technology of ENSIS fiber optic laser more than doubles CB Fabricating’s sheet metal cutting capacity. This recent equipment purchase, an $800,000 investment, brings the company’s total investment in equipment and facilities to about $4 million over the last four years.

“All of the investments we’ve made over the last few years really positioned us to take advantage of the improving economy and bigger demand for metal fabrication services like ours,” says CB Fabricating owner Chris Barkdull. “With our CO2 laser running at full capacity, adding another machine just made sense. This newer fiber optic laser cutter runs cleaner parts, faster, and uses less energy and consumables. We’ve already added six full-time and three part-time employees in the last few months and are looking forward to another banner year for 2018.”

The ENSIS AJ 3015 AJ fiber laser has advantages in speed and precision over conventional CO2 laser-cutting equipment, particularly in thin material applications. It runs, on average, three times faster than a CO2 laser doing the same job. The newer fiber optic laser cutting technology uses a thin, high-energy density beam to cut thin materials at high speed while retaining the ability to cut ferrous steel up to one-inch thick. This feature, Amada's "variable beam control" technology, is also able to automatically and continuously match the thickness of the metal sheet, providing cleaner, more consistent cuts that require less finish work, further improving production turnaround times. .
